FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT

The conference will be held on October 3-6, 2007 in Vladivostok, Russia at the V.I. Il*ichev Pacific Oceanological Institute, Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (POI FEB RAS) under the auspices of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) and the Federal Space Agency (FSA) with co-sponsorship (under negotiation) of IOC/WESPTAC, UNEP/Northwestern Pacific Action Plan (NOWPAP), Pan-Ocean Remote Sensing Conference (PORSEC) and Russian Fund for Basic Research (RFBR).

In organizing and steering of the conference the following organizations took part: Center for Regional Satellite Monitoring of Environment FEB RAS, Pacific Institute of Geography (PIG FEB RAS), Institute of Cosmophysical Research and Radiowaves Propagation (ICRP FEB RAS), Far Eastern State University (FESU), Pacific Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography (TINRO-Center), Sakhalin Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography (SakhNIRO), Primorye Regional Administration for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring (PRAHEM).

Suggested topics are listed below however consideration will be given to papers on other related subjects.

Remote sensing of sea surface temperature and surface wind

Remote sensing of frontal zones, currents and eddy formations

Satellite monitoring of ocean color and oil pollution

Monitoring of ice cover of the Pacific Marginal Seas

         Marine Weather Systems

Modern technologies of satellite data processing and GIS

History changed and the cosmic era began on October 4, 1957 when Soviet Union successfully launched Sputnik-I, the first satellite. This caused a major breakthrough in geosciences by drastic increase in volume of information and its new qualitative level. The date of the Sputnik-I launch should be considered as a beginning of satellite remote sensing in the earth sciences and in particular in oceanography. Fifty years have passed then. Satellite data became common in modern oceanographic studies and brought new vision of the processes took place in the ocean and atmosphere. The main goal of this memorable conference is to present the current advances in investigation of the Asia Marginal Seas carried out with the usage of satellite data.

Satellite-based researches of the sea and the atmosphere have been conducting at POI about 30 years. Scientists of FEB RAS, Far Eastern Russian universities and research organizations, as well as their colleagues in Japan, China, Korea and other countries use satellite information to study the oceanic dynamics, characteristics and variations of ice cover, the atmospheric processes of different scales, participate in the national and international space programs and experiments. They are developing new methods of observations, data processing and applications.

New remote sensing sensors launched on satellites of USA, Japan, European Space Agency, India, China and other countries contribute to an improved knowledge of the ocean-atmosphere system and represent significant steps forward. It persistently requires the widening and deepening of cooperation between scientists of different courtiers using satellite observations in their research. The planned conference would significantly support toward this goal.

The Organizing Committee invites you to take an active part in the Conference and in its successful preparation. We would also appreciate if you could circulate this information among your colleagues and potential participants.
